Do you have a DePuy Hip Implant? Do you know if it is being affected by the ASR Hip Recall?
If you have a DePuy ASR XLAcetabular System, the answer is yes. This type of implant was used for total hip replacements, and it had been approved by the FDA for that purpose.
There is another recalled implant, the ASR Hip Resurfacing System, which has been used in a newer version of the hip surgery that is designed to conserve more of the patient’s bone structure.
The resurfacing system has not been approved by the FDA for the United States, though two types of patients received it anyway: Those involved in clinical trials, and those who went abroad to have their hip replacement surgery.
All in all, more than 90,000 people have received one of these two Depuy ASR implants.
Hip Recall – What to do?
So what happens if you have one of these implants? Do you have to have it removed as soon as possible.
Not necessarily. But you definitely need to go see your doctor and have it checked.
These implants have a failure rate that’s at least twice as high as that of more traditional implants.
DePuy ASR and Metal Toxicity
But there are other complications that may be possible, including metal toxicity (since metal is rubbing on metal in the Depuy ASR XL implant). So you have to have that checked.
Hip Recall — Zimmer Hip Recall & Sulzer Hip Recall
The DePuy hip implants are not the only ones that have been recalled. Two years ago, the Zimmer hip recall was all over the news. It affected the Zimmer Durom Cup, which also had a higher rate of earlier than usual failures.
And a few years back, the Sulzer recall brought the whole concept of hip recalls to the world’s attention.
What matters is this — if you have received a recalled hip implant after 2005, you may be eligible for compensation.
